27th Snow and Ice Festival kicks off in Harbin

2011-01-07
On Wednesday, China's northern city of Harbin kicks off the 27th annual Snow and Ice Festival. The city transforms its abundance of snow and ice into beautiful sculptures for all to enjoy.

The festival is expected to welcome several million tourists from across China as well as visitors from around the world. The celebration will continue until early February. The northern city has an abundance of snow and ice, which local volunteers and sculptors have spent weeks carving out beautifully intricate structures. The blocks of ice used for the festival were cut from the Songhua River. The ice is particularly clear as it freezes slowly each winter and the river's under current polishes it from beneath.

The ice is used to create enormous ice sculptures that resemble famous buildings, places or people and shine brightly at night with the help of multi-colored lights.

Shanghai resident, Zhao, brought his family to experience the chilly attractions. Mr. Zhao, Shanghai Tourist, said, "During winter, I enjoy going somewhere unique and interesting. This year I decided to go somewhere extremely cold, so I came to Harbin to appreciate the beauty of the Snow and Ice Festival. I kept hearing that it was a must to see."

In addition to the sculptures, visitors can enjoy a variety of winter activities such as ice swimming, ice sculpting competitions, and other winter related sports.

The ice festival will open with a display of lights and fireworks for tourists.
