Spelled in Jiaguwen in Chinese, the carapace-bone-scripts were discovered in the capital ruins of the Shang Dynasty (17th - 11th century B.C.), Anyang (in today Henan Province). They are some characters that inscribed on the bones or tortoise shells. They were first used for divining or keeping a record of events by the royal family. These hieroglyphs are considered the oldest Chinese characters.
