Longsheng

Longsheng, or Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County is a county in northeast Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in southern China. It is under the administration of Guilin City, with a population of 167,000 as of 2010. Covering an area of 2538 square kilometres, the county borders Xing'an and Ziyuan to the east, Lingchuan and Lingui to the south, Rong'an and Sanjiang to the west, and a small section to the northwest with Hunan Province.

Geography
Longsheng is a mountainous county, lies at an average of 700-800 metres above sea-level.

Climate
Longsheng enjoys a monsoon climate with abundant rainfall and a pleasant climate, the average temperature for the year is 24 18.1℃ with a July average temperature of 28.3 ℃. The average rainfall for the year is 1544 mm. The average frost-free period is 317 days, it is cold in winter and not too hot in summer.

History
Longshengyao VillagesLongsheng was called Sangjiang before the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BC) unified China. In the 33rd year of his reign, Longsheng was under the administration of Guilin. It got its current name in 1741 when the Qing Dynasty's force put down the revolt lead by a peasant from Dong ethinc group. This war was known as the emperor's vicotory, hence the government named the county Longsheng (long means dragon, it represents the emperor in ancient China, and Sheng means victory in Chinese). In Dec. 1956, the county was designated as Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County by China's State Council. 

Transport
On motorway or highway, about 101 km to Guilin, 531 km to Nanning. There are no railways connect to Longsheng at present. To get to the county from Guiliin, the passengers have to take bus at Qintan Bus Station.

Ethnic Groups
Longsheng has more than 10 ethnic groups, which mainly including Miao, Yao, Dong and Zhuang. Currently, there are 128,800 in Longsheng, accounting for approximately 77.22% of the total population (in 2010).

Festivals
-Read Clothes Festival
The festival is annually held in the 8th day of the 4th month of the Chinese lunar calendar by the the all the Red Yao people in Longsheng.

-Drying Clothes Festival
The festival is annually held in the sixth day of the sixth month of the Chinese lunar calendar by the the Red Yao people, who live in the Tiantou Village and Dazhai Village, where is embraced by the beautiful Jing Keng Terraced Rice Fields.

Tourism
The famous attraction of Longsheng is definitely the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces. Making the terraces began in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and the projects lasted till the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) when construction was completed. Where there is soil, there is a terrace', it now covers an area of 66 square kilometers including many beautiful ethnic villages. The other famous attraction of Longsheng is the Longsheng Hot Springs, which is located in the Longsheng Wenquan National Forest Park.
