Nine Must-see Tourist Sites in Sichuan

Sichuan, a province in south western China, has been historically known as the "Heaven of Abundance". It distinguished itself by its spicy cuisines, hot pot, panda bears, tea houses, Qiang ethnic culture, Bian Lian (face-changing), mahjong and pretty Chengdu girls...So travel to Sichuan you should not miss its 9 must-see tourist sites.

Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaiguo, literally "the Valley of Nine Villages", is praised as the "heaven on earth" and "the fairyland of the planet" by travelers. There are nine (jiu) Tibetan villages (Zhai) in the valley (gou), hence the name. In China, it is commonly called Jiuzhaigou Valley. This national nature reserve is located in the north of Sichuan and known for its many multi-level waterfalls, colorful lakes, springs, limpid rivulets, rivers, plants, and rare animals. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

Huanglong Scenic Area

Nicknamed the "terrestrial heaven", the beautiful Huanglong Scenic Area is located in Songpan County, Qiang People's Autonomous Prefecture. The area is famous for its colorful lakes, snowclad mountains, valleys and forests. Here is also the habitat of giant panda bears and snub-nosed golden monkeys.

Leshan Giant Buddha

Originally caved in 713 A.D. and finally accomplished in 803 A.D. The Buddha is so big that the ancient Chinese poets wrote: "the Buddha is a Mountain, the Mountain is a Buddha.At 71 metres tall, the statue depicts a seated Maitreya Buddha with his hands resting on his knees. His shoulders are twenty-eight metres wide and his smallest toenail is large enough to easily accommodate a seated person. The Giant Buddha is located to the east of Leshan City, Sichuan Province and on the Lingyun Mountain where Min River, Qingyi River and Dadu River meet.

Emei Mountain

The Mecca of the trekking enthusiasts. The mountain is only 7 km from Emeishan City and 37km from Leshan City, and is one of the four famous Buddhism Mountains in China. The mountain is famed for the ancient grand temples, monkey reserves, and the natural wonders: sunrise, sea of clouds, Buddhist lights and sacred lamp...In 1996, it was designated the World Cultural and Natural Heritage by the UNESCO.

Daocheng

Located in the southwest border of Sichuan at an average elevation of 3800m, Daocheng is higher in north and west and lower in south and east. Winding and majestic mountains like billows of the sea alternate with valleys. Hence, the high-altitude mountain peaks clad in snow all the year round, deep serene valleys with gurgling brooks and broad pastures. Daochang is also full of discovery of primitive Tibetan villages, Buddhism monasteries and pastoral scenery brought by the rolling landscapes.

Dujiang WeirDujiang Weir

Built in 256 B.C., the Dujiang Weir is located in Dujiangyan City, 50 km west of Chengdu. It is known as the oldest water project with no-dam in the world. The weir divides the Minjiang River into two parts, guiding part of water to Jintang in the east, so that the southern plain can avoid floods, and the northern can keep away from drought. It helps well irrigate the Chengdu Plain and makes waterway transportation more convenient. There are many famous historical sites by the weir such as Fulong Temple, Erwang Temple, Anlan Rope Bridge, Yuleiguan Pass, Lidui Park, Yuleishan Park and Lingyan Temple etc.

Conch Valley

Situated at the foot of the Gongga Mountain, the Conch Valley (Hailuo Gou) is world-famous for its unique present glacier in lower altitude. The valley is now entitled: Key National Scenic Spot, National Forest Park, National Natural Reserve,State-level Geological Park, Glacier National Park. The highlight here is a Giant ice fall, which height measures 1,000 meters, and the width stretches about 1,100 meters.

Bamboo Sea

Aka the Bamboo Forest in Southern Sichuan. The bamboo sea is located in Yibin City. It covers an area of 120 square kilometers of mountain slopes at an elevation from 600 to 1000m. There are more than 400 kinds of bamboo grow here. In its central region, over 5000 hectares of bamboo shelters 28 ridges and peaks, with many cultural relics and historic sites screened by the feathery green tufts. There are Bamboo Sea Museum, old folk residences on Mount Xijia and fish fossils. It is a comparatively big primeval ecological bamboo forest combining mountains, rivers, karst caves, lakes and falls with artificial scenes of long history.

Qingcheng Mountain

68 kilometers from Chengdu, Qingcheng Mountain has been known since ancient times as "the most tranquil place under heaven". It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2000 by UNESCO. Climbing the mountain on an early spring or summer morning, you will find it shrouded in mist, which moistens stone steps rising up towards the summit. Forests of pine, Chinese fir, cypress and all kinds of fragrant undergrowth make up a deep green world. The only sounds you hear are birds, waterfalls and the tourists' footsteps. Chinese hermits and men of letters have long cherished the perfect sense of peace in Mountain Qingcheng.
