Wulingyuan Scenic Area

Situated in the west of Hunan Province, Wulinyuan Scenic Area (commonly known as Zhangjiajie) is considered as the biggest natural scenic spot in China, with the most comprehensive species and resources. This 500 sq km park is full of stunning tall karst quartzite sandstone pillars (3,103), covered with sub-tropical rainforest, the park is often clad in mist, adding to the mystery but obscuring views.

In China, Wulinyuan Scenic Area is also known as Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area. It is part of Zhangjiajie city, about 270km from the capital of Hunan province, Changsha. The park consists of 4 scenic areas: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Valley, Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie Nature Reserve. Gigantic peaks of quartz sandstone spring from the ground and form many different and strange shapes. The well-developed and mysterious karst caves make a perfect combination with the forest of peaks, and over 800 streams, zigzagging through the mountains and valleys, add more vitality and beauty to the place. The steep peaks, hanging waterfalls, primeval forests and gigantic limestone caves for form the perfect rarely seen scenery.

In 1992, Wulingyuan Scenic Area was designated as the World-famous Natural Heritage by the UNESCO and as the world geological park in the year 2002.
