Macau was under Portuguese administration from the mid-16th century until 1999; during this period, unique customs and culture along historical heritage left and made Macau a special city blending culture of East and West.

The Historical Centre of Macau or The History Center of Macao houses many historical street, residential, religious and public Portuguese and Chinese buildings which act as a unique testimony that the mixture of aesthetic, cultural, architectural and technological influences of the East and West. The Historic Centre of Macau was officially inscribed on the prestigious World Heritage List by UNESCO on 15 July 2005.

The famous buildings and street in Historical Centre of Macau include street and piazzas, such as Barra Square, Lilau Square, St. Augustine's Square, Senado Square, Cathedral Square, St. Ominic's Square, Company of Jesus Square and Camoes Square. These major urban squares and street provide the linkage for a succession of over twenty monuments, including A-Ma Temple and many other unique buildings.
