The Museum of Macao

The Museum of Macao, located in the bowels of ancient Monte Fortress, facing the St. Paul's Ruins, provides an excellent overview of Macau's history, local traditions, and arts and crafts.

The plan and construction of Museum of Macau began in April 1995, finished in April 1998. The museum building is implanted within the interior of the fortress while the administrative building, already on the exterior of the fortress. The exhibition space is around 2,100 square meters.

Although the Museum does not possess a collection of a high monetary value, it includes a vast number of objects of a great historical value. The exhibition area could be divided in three parts on three floors.

The first floor showcases the beginning of Macau and the arrival of Portuguese; the culture comparisons between Chinese and Europe, such as the systems, philosophies, and religions are listed there.

The life, custom and traditions of Macau are listed at second floor, with detailed introductions of festivals, wedding, and industries and so on. Displays include paintings and photographs of Macau through the centuries, traditional games and toys, an explanation of Macanese cuisine and architecture, and a re-created Macanese street lined with colonial and Chinese facades and containing tea, pastry, and traditional Chinese pharmacy shops.

The third floor is displaying the modern Macau and its plan for future. It is a great place to learn more facts about Macau and its culture there.
