The "Third Day of the Third Lunar Month Festival of the Hainan Li and Miao People

*Time: The third of the third lunar month, which generally falls on the first 10-day period of April.

*Venue: Qiongzhong, Dongfang, Changjiang, Ledong, Baisha Country and Wuzhishan City in Hainan Province

*Origin: Legend has it that in the remote antiquity, the Li people lived by the Changhua River on Hainan Island. One year there cane a serious flood, causing all the Li people death, leaving only a young girl and her eider brother. The boy was called Tianfei, and the girl, Guanyin. On the third day of the third lunar month, the girl made herself up and was married to her elder brother. As time went by, more and more Li people were and grew up. To commemorate the brother and sister, the Li people hold the sacrificial activity on the third day of the third lunar month every year. Now it is a traditional Festival for the Li young People to pursue for love and happiness.

*What’s On: At the festival, the Li people from different villages gather at an open area to attend various activities, such as gun and arrow shooting competitions, singing in antiphonal style, and performing the bamboo dance. It is a special day for young men and women to go deep into the mountains I pairs, known as the ‘mountain love.” 

*Main Tourist Attractions: Wuzhi Mountain Scenic Area, Wanquan River, Five Lords Shrine, End of the Earth and Corner of the Ocean, Yalong Bay, Qionghai Guantang Hot Spring Resort, etc.

*Transport: Tourist may fly to Haikou or Sanya, and then get on a bus to go Wenchang or Wuzhishan.

Hainan International Coconut Festival

*Time: Early April every year

*Venue: Haikou City, Wenchang Country, Wuzhishan City and Sanya City in HainanProvince

*Origin: The coconut tree is the symbol of Hainan Island, hence the name “Coconut Island.” To display the elegant demeanor of the Haimam Special Economic Zone, the Hainan Provincial People’s Government held the Hainan Coconut Festival from April 3 to 8, 1992 for the first time. After that the festival is held in early April every year to showcase Hainan’s coconut culture and local customs, and hold commercial and trade talks.

*What’s On: The Coconut City Lantern Fair, a visit to Coconut Street, the carnival of the Li and Miao people, the international dragon boat race, the open contest of maritial arts, theatrical and sports performances, the wedding ceremonies of the Li and Miao people, the activity of offering sacrifices to ancestors, etc.

*Main Tourist Attractions: Wuzhi Mountain Scenic Area, Wanquan River, Five Lords’ Shrine, End of the Earth and Corner of the Sea, Yalong Bay, Qionghai Guantang Hot Spring Resort, etc.

*Transport: Tourists may go to Haikou or Sanya by plane, where they can take a bus to Wenchang or Wuzhishan.

    Hi, you can attend the lantern fair and the carnival of the Li and Miao people, or visit the Coconut Street, watch the activity of offering sacrifices to ancestors and the theatrical & sports performances. To attend other events you must get an invitation from the organizer.

    I will be in Boao China from March 31 to April 3 and sanya china from April 4 through April 7 and want to know what Coconut Festivals events I might attend?
