Fengcai Tower

The Fengcai Tower, the oldest architecture located in the centre of Shaoguan, is the icon of the city and now served as Museum of Shaoguan.

The magnificent Fengcai Tower was built in Ming Dynasty in year of 1497 by the magistrate of Shaoguan that time. It was built just to commemorate the noted Prime Minister Yu Jing of Northern Song Dynasty who was born in Shaoguan. Yu Jing was skillful both the pen and the sword and contributed a lot for the dynasty and people. The Fengcai Road beside the tower was also built in his honor.

Fengcai Tower is overlooking the Wu River in the west and the Zhen River in the east. It was built in the same period with Forbidden City of Beijing, with a height of 22 meters. It features in a shape of square, with three-storied eaves, carved angles. On the grand arch, there is the name of Fengcai Tower wrote by the famous calligrapher Baisha Chen.

The last renovation of Fengcai Tower was in 1933, added some concrete structure to the original brick and wood structure.
