Huanglong National Park

Huanglong is a scenic and historic area in Songpan County NW of Sichuan. Located in the southern part of the Minshan mountain range, 150 km NW of Chengdu, this beautiful national park features with colorful pools formed by calcite deposits, diverse forest ecosystems, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls and hot springs. Huanglong is also home to many endangered species including Giant Panda and Sichuan Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. Being a special nature reserve of the world, Huanglong Scenic Area was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992.

Huanglong takes the name for the ancient Huanglong Temple on the top of the area. Huanglong Scenic Area extends over 700 square kilometers, and contains two parts: the Huanglong and Maonigou. Huanglong Scenic Area is made of numerous unique landscapes due to thousands of years of geological evolution. The main landscapes are travertine banks, colorful ponds, travertine waterfalls and caves.

The most remarkable scene in the area is Huanglong Valley (Yellow Dragon Valley), with 3.6 kilometers long and 30 to 70 meters wide pale yellow calcareous deposits as the main attraction. A variety of calcareous deposits reflect a golden color in the sunlight in the water, which looks like a huge golden dragon winding its way through the snow-capped mountains of the valley.
