Garden of Retreat and Reflection

Garden of Retreat and Reflection, Suzhou ToursLying in the waterside township of Tongli, the Retreat and Reflection Garden (Tuisi Garden, or Garden of Seclusion and Meditations) was built by Ren Lansheng in 1886 during the Qing Dynasty after he was discharged from office.

The garden's name was derived from an aphorism in the famous biography Zuo Zhuan (or spell Tso Chuan, a commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals) by Zuo Qiuming of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 - 221BC), which says: "Be loyal to the emperor when in officialdom; be meditative upon the previous faults while away from officialdom." hence the name.

Covering an area of about 700 square meters, the garden is divided into two parts. The residential area to the west consists of an outer and inner house, including the sedan hall, tea hall, a main reception hall and two buildings that form the actual dwelling. The garden in the east has ponds, Marble Boats, waterside pavilions, halls, kiosks, verandas, rockeries and bridges. Together with its flourishing trees and colorful flowers the garden greets visitors with its beauty and charm in every season.
