Shanghai 2010 World ExpositionWorld Exposition 2010 Shanghai China will last 184 days (from May 1st to Oct. 31st, 2010). It is predicted that nearly 200 national and international organizations will attend this grand assembly; and it is anticipated to attract 70 million visitors. The radiation effect of the Expo will not only promote the development of the economy, tourism, culture and other industries in the Yangtze River Delta, but make its own contribution to the economic development of China as a whole.

Better City, Better Life

Emblem
Inspire by the shape of the calligraphic creation of the Chinese character "世" (meaning the World) and its holding time 2010, the emblem projects the image of three people - you, me, him/her throwing their arms around each other. It symbolizes the big family of mankind in harmony and happiness, and conveys the notion of the World Expo of "understanding, communication, union and co-operation'. It exemplifies Expo 2010 Shanghai China's focus on the humanistic values.

Shanghai, World Expo 2010The Mascot of the World Exposition Shanghai is named Haibao (it means the treasure of the world ), is originally from the Chinese character "人" (means the people or human being) and the blue sea that symbolizes life and vitality; it rise its head and throw a chest with a smile, which shows Chinese people's optimism, cordiality, forgiveness, and pushfulness. While the pose of giving the thumb up means to send a cordial invitation to the people from all over the world.

Exhibition Site
The area for Expo 2010 Shanghai China is located between the Nanpu Bridge and Lupu Bridge along both sides of the Huangpu River. The planning area within the site boundary covers 5.28 square kilometers in which 3.93 square kilometers is in the Pudong (East of the Huangpu River) District while 1.35 square Kilometers in the Puxi (West of the Huangpu River) District. The enclosed area (admission by ticket) is about 3.28 square Kilometers (excluding water surface area)

General Plan
The general plan of Expo 2010 Shanghai China puts forward a five level structure, namely, one Park, one Enclosed Area, five Zones, twelve Groups, and twenty-six Clusters.

One Park
The Expo Park covers a total area of 5.28 square kilometers, including the enclosed area and areas of support facilities outside the enclosure. The Expo Park spans both sides of the Huangpu River, with 3.93 square kilometers in Pudong and 1.35 square lilometers in Puxi.

Five Zones
There are five functional zones marked A, B, C, D, and E respectively, each with an average area of 60 hectares.

Twelve Groups
There are 12 pavilion groups designed, 8 of which being in the Pudong District and 4 in the Puxi District, each with an average area of 10- 15 hectares.

Twenty-six Clusters
There are 26 pavilion clusters each covering 2-3 hectares. The average floor area of each pavilion cluster can accommodate 40-50 exhibition units with each exhibition unit covering a total floor area of 20,000-25,000 square meters. For the sake of convenience, each pavilion cluster will contain small canteens, shops, telecom, toilets, nursing services and other public facilities.

Shanghai 2010 World ExpositionForeign national pavilions, to be grouped by the Continent they belong to, will include 3 types: Type 1, Pavilions designed and built by official participants; Type 2, Stand-alone pavilion structures built by the Organizer and rented to participants. Type 3, Joint Pavilions constructed by the Organizer offering covered spaces to developing nations.

Zone A is located between the Expo Axis and Yuntai Road to the west and the Bailianjing rivulet to the east in the Pudong District. Zone A will hold China Pavilion and national pavilions for Asian countries except Southeast Asia.

Zone B will cover an area between Zone A to the east and Lupu Bridge to the west, holding theme pavilions, foreign National Pavilions of Southeast Asian and Oceanian countries, Pavilions for International Organizations, Public Events Center and Performance Center.

Zone C is located in Houtan to the west of Lupu Bridge in the Pudong Sextion. It will hold some foreign national pavilions and international organization pavilions. The foreign national pavilions in this zone will be European, American and African national pavilion clusters. A large public amusement park of about 10 hectares will be built at the entrance.

Zone D is located in the west of the Expo Axis in the Puxi District. The land is one of the original places of modern Chinese national industry and the site of the Jiangnan Shipyard. There still remain a lot of industrial buildings and facilities. In order t preserve the heritage of urban industry, some of the old industrial buildings will, according to their historical features, be kept and turned into corporate pavilions. And, for their precious historical value, the docklands and slipway to the east of the corporate pavilions will be preserved. Together with the squares and open spaces along the Expo Axis they will be rendered into areas for outdoor public exhibition and cultural exchange.

Zone E, located in the east of the Expo Axis in the Puxi District, will hold stand-alone corporate pavilions and the Urban Best Practices Area.

Corporate Participation
The participating enterprises must have considerable strength, a sound reputation and a good corporate image.

Located on the western side of the Huangpu River, corporate pavilions are distributed in the east zone, core zone and west zone of Puxi.

There are in total 16 corporate pavilions, 14 of which are newly built while 2 are renovated buildings.

Urban Best Practice Area
To highlight the theme of "city", an "Urban Best Practices Area" has been set up by the Expo organizer. Located in Zone E on the western side of the river, Urban Boast Practice Area covers an area of 12 hectares with two sections: the south section and the north section.

Events

Performances and cultural events at the Expo are not only an important way of theme elaboration but also a promotional tool for the Expo.

Important events: opening and closing ceremony and National Day of China Pavilion.
Count-down and milestone activities: celebrations in milestones before the opening ceremony.
Ordinary events: nearly 20,000 events in 8 categories after the opening ceremony.

Shanghai 2010 World ExpositionForums

Forum is one of the most direct ways to explore the Expo theme and carry forward the spiritual heritage of the Expo.

World Expo 2010 Shanghai will serve as a platform for the exchange and promotion of the idea, successful practice and technologies of "urban sustainable development". This will include the discussion of the urbanization of developing countries as well as practical experience and innovation in advancing rural education and hygiene; the forecast of challenges facing urban development and possible solutions.

Forums will be categorized into summit forums, them forums and public forums.

Summit forums will host heads of government, international celebrities and decision makers in business, academic and cultural world and mainstream media, where the concept of urban development and the relationship between a comfortable living environment, and globalization and sustainable development will be discussed from a macro perspective.

Theme forums will gather the elite from all walks of life, to explore the urban system, structure and way of management of a modern city from a meso perspective and generate a group of ideas by drawing on their expertise.

Public forums will discuss concrete issues in urban development from a micro perspective through wide and varied public participation so as to increase the awareness of public participation.
