Yangshuo Hot Air Ballooning

Currently the local government suspended the business of hot air ballooning in Yangshuo. Once it is open to the tourists, we will update the news immediately.

Hot Air Ballooning offers a overlook of Yangshuo's karst scenery, which is spectacular from the ground, but nothing compares to floating above it. You will be delighted by the hundreds of vertical sided hills, rivers, traditional villages and the patchwork of small farms.

Your adventure, with the security of our Chinese Australian ballooning company, includes return transfers from your hotel in luxury vehicles. Flights are approximately 60 minutes but may be cancelled, with a full refund, in the unlikely event of bad weather.

Your driver and guide will drive you to Hongqi Pier, from where the balloon embarks. There are two types of flights available and both can be booked from China Fact Tours.

Tethered flight

The hot air balloon is anchored to the ground by a rope and is let out slowly. You will float up gently and be able to watch the scenery transform as you ascend. This option is particularly favored for those who are scared of the thought of flying up too high. Generally these flights last about 15 minutes and reach approximately 100 meters.

Free flight

The hot air balloon flies for about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the thermals. The pilots are all experts and have many years experience piloting the balloons around the region. Be ready to skim the tops of the mandarin orchards, meander through karst peaks and soar high above the landscape reaching heights of 1500 meters on this memorable balloon ride.

  • Wei on June 3, 2013, 12:00 pm

Hi Barry, sorry to inform you that the ban may not be lifted in 2013. However, the low sky aviation rights will be granted in the next few years to companies like hot air balloon and small airplanes. And I am confident that companies with safety management will start this interesting activities.

To Dan- From Aug. to Oct. the air is the clearest for photos in Yangshuo; the fog may be well below the peaks after the rain during the rainy season (Apr. to July), the air sometimes is clear but sometimes not. It depends on the rainfall; yes, the balloon rides still suspended. I think they will operate again sooner or later because this tour program can bring a large sum of money to the locals and the tour companies. According to a friend of mine in Yangshuo, the local government maybe remove the ban in next year.

  • Dan on July 29, 2010, 1:17 am

Can you tell me when the air is the clearest for photos. I would like to come to Yangshuo for a month and take about 15 balloon rides during that time, but in past have had much haze in early morning. Is there a good time of year when either fog is well below the peaks or there is clear air? Are the balloon rides still suspended or are they operating again? Thank you...

  • Ripple on July 14, 2010, 3:41 pm

Hi Ken, the ban on hot air balloon riding still has not been removed since the 4 Dutch tourists were killed by the hot-air balloon accident on 14 Oct 2009. So we are not sure whether we can offer you balloon riding or not in November. Let's keep in touch.

  • ken hagen on July 13, 2010, 6:18 pm

I am visiting Yangshou in November, do they still do balloon rides then? It would be the first week in November.

  • Lam Zhang on March 23, 2010, 10:47 am
